Abstract:

This data set represents Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones based on the 1972 act that addresses seismic hazard of surface fault rupture by prohibiting the placement of most structures for human occupancy across the traces of active faults. The data depicted in this set should be used to advice sellers and real-estate agents whether property being sold is within an Earthquake Fault Zone.

This data is considered electronic facsimiles of the Official Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zone Maps as were compiled by the Department of Conservation and the California Geological Survey. Preliminary review and official fault-zone maps can be found at www.conservation.ca.gov/cgs

Purpose:

To be used as part of a Hazard-Disclosure Tool for advising residents and potential buyers of their proximity to delineated Earthquake Faults and Fault Zones.

This data was compiled from 29 separate Shapefiles (corresponding to 29 separate quadrangles across the county). These individual data sets represent mapping at a 1:24,000 scale which was done over the last 25 years. Though the data can be represented at scales other than 1:24,000, precision will decline as the scale is pushed beyond 1:24,000 - the scale at which the USGS basemap standards specify that 90% of cultural features be located within 40' horizontal accuracy of their placed point.
